My review of Jiani He’s Ruling the Mongols of Manchuria: Language, Literacy, and Power in Late Qing Borderlands (Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2025) is now out on the Journal of Chinese History‘s 中國歷史學刊 FirstView platform. I expect the page numbers to be different when it is published in the actual journal issue.
